What we do
We’re on a mission to teach adults to read by providing them with evidence-based learning. Every aspect of our curriculum—from key words to decodable texts to illustrations—is designed for adults based on the science of reading. Our program is simple, scripted, and ready for use.
why we do it
48 million adults in the United States read below the third-grade level. Unfortunately, most adult literacy programs can’t or won’t serve these students with appropriate and effective curriculum. The Volunteer Literacy Project is a response to this gaping hole in the literacy world.
who we are
We’re a small grassroots organization started by former writer and editor Larissa Phillips. She started this in direct response to adults who came to her GED tutoring program looking to learn basic reading skills. Since then, she has come to believe that literacy resources should be available to all.

Sounds cool... how can I help?
Become a tutor.
Most tutors have no background in education—that’s fine! As long as you can pronounce vowels with a solid American accent, we’ll provide in-depth training, along with continued support after you begin tutoring. Training meets on Zoom every Monday night for six weeks. We’d love to see you there.

Use our curriculum.
If you want to start a small local program—for instance, in your church or library—we’ll provide training, materials, and support. We want these tools to be available to everyone, so we’ll provide the same resources that allow our volunteers to become effective, successful tutors.

Collaborate.
We collaborate with organizations and foundations to set up basic literacy programs. We can train your staff with our in-depth method, and we’ll continue to support you after you’ve set up your program. And if you have other collaboration ideas, we’re all ears!

VOLUNTEERS
The most satisfying volunteer experience I’ve ever had, and it’s not even close.
This is the first adult literacy program I’ve been part of that actually taught us how to teach reading.
Unlike every other adult literacy program I’ve been involved with, this one actually trained us and gave us skills.
