They are adults, and they can’t read. 

What do I do?

It is impossible not to think of how literacy historically has been denied intentionally to certain groups of people.

You can feel the confidence draining from the student’s entire countenance, but they keep going, every now and then scolding themselves sternly.

I am stunned to learn that no one seems to know how to teach reading to adults.
