The Volunteer Literacy Project provides training, curriculum, and support for groups and individuals who want to teach reading to teens and adults.

In-Depth Training

The tutors who come to the Volunteer Literacy Project almost universally have no background in education. We offer the knowledge and tools that allow our volunteers to become effective, successful tutors. We provide in-depth training with explicit, proven methods to teach reading, along with continued support after the volunteer begins tutoring.

Weekly Sessions

Once trained, volunteers are matched with a student. Every week the student and the volunteers meet on an online platform for a 90-minute lesson. A supervisor is always available to provide support or troubleshoot new hurdles for the tutor and the student. In most cases, tutors work with the same student every week, developing a relationship as well as expertise in the student’s needs.

Resources for individuals, groups, and organizations

Whether you are an organization, a small group, or an individual, we can provide you with the resources you need to launch and run an effective basic literacy program.

As an individual, you can go through the Volunteer Literacy Project training and join an existing group of our tutors; or if you already have the organizational structure but need the tools, small groups and organizations can bring their own teams and supervisors to VLP for training.
